42-Year-Old Woman Medevacked Off Fishing Vessel Near Noyes Island, Alaska

July 19, 2019

A 42-year-old woman had to be medevacked off a fishing vessel near Noyes Island, Alaska, early Thursday afternoon after a blunt object hit her head.

Coast Guard Sector Juneau watchstanders received a call from Craig City Habormaster staff at approximately 11:40 a.m. on Thursday. According to the staff, a crew member was bleeding and in and out of consciousness after getting struck in the head with a blunt object.

The Harbormaster crew met the fishing vessel near Cape Ulitka on the north end of Noyes Island, where an EMT was able to look over the crew member and get the bleeding under control. The MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Sitka arrived shortly after and transported the crew member to Sitka, where emergency medical service personnel were waiting to take her to Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital.

"Overall it was a very smooth hoist, and the crew members on board were very welcoming and helped out," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Aaron Eckstein. "The crew assisted in getting her over to the basket and one of the crew members assisted with the trail line."
